Title: The Way of the World
Author: McKay ( scribbulus_ink)
Commentary: McKay's "Way of the World" contains some wonderful domestic scenes between Snape and Lupin in the kitchen, where, for example, Lupin teaches Snape how to cook (and survive) in the muggle world.
McKay already posted a great recipe from the story, so I hope no one minds that I'm posting one for brownies inspired by this delightful scene:
Excerpt:
"Laugh at me, will you?" Severus snarled. "You'll pay for that!"
And suddenly, Severus reached into the bowl, scooped up a huge handful of batter, and advanced on Remus.
"No -- Severus, you wouldn't!" Remus stared at him, wide-eyed, as he began backing away.
"Oh, wouldn't I." Severus' voice was a silky purr now, but his smile was pure evil. ( Remus couldn't help but think that batter-covered Severus would have been even better. )

| Happy belated Thanksgiving |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|10:40 pm] |
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving! I had dinner with my family and am pleasantly stuffed. I contributed the pumpkin pies--I've never liked store-bought pumpkin pie, but if it's homemade (I just use the recipe on the back of the Libby's pumpkin filling can and it always comes out great), somehow it tastes much better. There's plenty of leftovers for tomorrow, too!
If anyone has any extra pumpkin leftover from baking, my sister sent me a recipe she found online for pumpkin pancakes. I haven't tried it myself yet, but she swears that "it rocks!" It does look pretty yummy in the picture on the blog.
I read a couple of interesting yaoi manga titles from Netcomics, but was too lazy to write up a review. I'll try to work on that tomorrow.
Also, reminder to self: hide the yaoi manga when family comes to visit! My brother came over for dinner and we were chatting in my room, when he picked up a manga volume from my bookshelf and casually started leafing through it. Fortunately, he happened to grab a copy of Emma rather than the stack of Kizuna volumes on the shelf above! ("Emma" is a series about a Victorian-era maid, btw, and a really great read with beautiful, detailed art--I highly recommend it.) Not that it would be a disaster if he did find the yaoi stash--he'd probably just raise his eyebrows and tease me a bit, but it would be a bit embarrassing to have my little brother finding my gay porn stash! ^_^ For the next family visit at Christmas, I'm shoving the porn to the back of the bookcase! |

| oh hell yes, I have a Snuggie |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|09:51 pm] |
We went down to Salinas to J's sister's new place, and holy crap is it huge. It's got a nifty layout, and infinitely more space than their old house. We hadn't seen Natalie since before she was walking so it took a while for her to stop giving J and I the suspicious eye, but by the end of the night it was lots of carry-me arms, and where Sophie is usually all about her Uncle J, somehow this time I ended up with her hanging on me more often than not. I suspect it was that I was wearing a pink shirt so that boosted my coolness rating. It's interesting to see the ways her personality has changed now that she's a big sister. Sometimes I wish we lived a bit closer in order to visit more often.
Anyway, we hung out, ate food, played with dolls, tried to devise a plan to steal their adorable pug, and at the end of the evening I got the bonus of belated b-day gifts. See subject. I have also increased my fuzzy scarf collection by one, so I should probably put out some of the ones I don't wear often out onto the curb.
The drive was nice, and J and I talked a lot about the ways in which we'd like to focus on our projects for school and general creative things. I'm back to having a solid idea of where to go with my current assignments so I'm feeling very rejuvenated about them. Which is good, as I need to be doubly-focused this weekend, since I didn't actually get any extra days off, and the lab is closed tomorrow which is typically my dedicated time to go in and work all day on my homework! |

Let's see--
1000 words of NaNo today. I'm at least a day behind as far as wordcount goes. Very frustrating. But I am getting there.
Gaming machine attacked by toxic malware today, so I lost at least an hours worth of time, and had a bit of a fit trying to get the bloody thing *off* my computer. *sighs* Gone, now, but really not a happy thing.
For those of you who have followed my family issues with my mother's side of the family--good thanksgiving this year. There were only eight of us total, so it was nice and quiet, which means no huge blowups. |

| Further Thanksgiving Festivities |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|09:50 pm] |
It's the Pilgrim's Bounty holiday in Azeroth, with food-related daily quests and themed garments offered as a reward for fulfilling the quests.
Why, yes, as a matter of fact I do bring my penchant for cross-dressing to Warcraft.
( My Blood Elf Death Knight in a dress: )
I did get a turkey caller as a quest reward, which I assume lets you summon a turkey to kill in order to help you make the required turkey meals for one of the quests. However, when you summon the turkey, it arrives with a great big heart over its head, which promptly shatters when it realizes you aren't a prospect turkey paramour, and it's labeled "lonely turkey". I couldn't kill a lonely turkey! I just let it wander free and haven't used the turkey caller again because I felt so guilty.

| How to ruin Thanksgiving |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|05:40 pm] |
As I was basting the turkey about half way through the cooking time, I noticed that my oven's clock was still set on daylight savings time. So I reset it. When I went to check what should have been a finished turkey, I found that the oven had been turned off in the clock reset process. Everything is ready to serve but the turkey...
I apologized to my family. No one said that's ok. My nephew said, "I'm really, really hungry."
I feel like an idiot. How many years have I been cooking turkeys and never screwed up?
Edit: It was the best turkey I've ever made ... very, very moist. Maybe I should write down what I did! LOL! |

| YAY LJ! |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|11:44 am] |
LJ to the rescue!
I'm making the corn pudding recipe I made a few years back, but after a frantic search through my recipe files (and boy, I need to organize that!) proved fruitless.
But then I remembered I took some pictures of it with Boy2 because he really liked it. And lo and behold! I also had posted the recipe. *huggles LJ archives* |

| Glee & etc. |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|11:04 am] |
I have not yet seen this week's episode, but: has anyone else found themselves just recording Glee and then fast-forwarding through it to (mostly) watch only the musical numbers? The actual "plots" have generally become deeply embarrassment (and otherwise) squick inducing for me, as much as I love the music.
While I'm talking about squick-inducing things, TCM is running a Fred Astaire marathon today, and Swing Time is on. I love this movie, not least for the completely awesome white dress with gorgeous full skirt that Ginger Rogers wears when she dances on the stairs with Fred. However! I believe that this movie is also the one which has Fred dancing in blackface. *facepalm* When I fell in love with this movie as a child, I didn't know any better, but now? Ick.
And while I'm here, I'd like to wish all who celebrate it a very Happy Thanksgiving! |

| Thanksgiving |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|09:39 am] |
Thanksgiving.
I was just informed that mom and her roommate were expecting me to do the Thanksgiving turkey. Along with pumpkin pie (crust from scratch) and my cheesecake.
Whut-?
This is going to be one of those weeks, isn't it?
Good thing it's 9am. |

| Happy Thanksgiving! |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|08:56 am] |
So it's about 9am here. I got up early to start defrosting the turkey in our never-fail hotwater method. We're also smoking a ham. Made an apple pie and a pumpkin cheesecake yesterday, as well as the dressing, a cranberry-orange relish and a chicken & butternut squash stew (for lunch today). Today I have to do, besides the turkey and ham, the corn pudding and the asparagus.
Boy2 has just gotten up; HeadBoy and Fred are still out and snuggling together. I think Boy1 is down at BlondBoy's house. We're watching the Macy's parade. Lordy, what cheese.
We stayed up late last night to watch 'Carriers'. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen. It was pretty bleak in terms of storyline. The best thing was that I figured out how to connect Albus to the TV, and it was awesome! I also found out by reading the TV user's manual (because I am female and I do that sort of thing) that our TV will connect to the internet by itself and will stream videos from Amazon. That's totally awesome. I still need to get that set up, but wow, so cool. [Hey, I remember black&white TVs with spin dials, no cable or satellite, and Star Trek when it was the most advanced show on TV.]
Went for a walk around the neighborhood yesterday, and today my left foot hurts like a mofo. Dammit.
I hope all my fellow Pilgrims have a great Thanksgiving Day. And I bid the rest of the world a very fine day. |
